Humanitarian Software is excited to announce a powerful new feature coming in this year’s HELM release: AI-Automated Item Setup. This capability leverages modern artificial intelligence to dramatically simplify and accelerate the process of creating new items in the HELM Item Master.
From Barcode to Fully Configured Item
With the new feature, users can simply enter or barcode scan a manufacturer’s item number or UPC code—optionally including a short description or hint about the product. HELM will then call an integrated AI research agent that automatically gathers product information from trusted sources.
The AI agent compiles this information into a structured JSON template containing approximately 20 standardized data elements related to the product. These elements may include:
• Product name and detailed description
• Manufacturer and brand name
• Product category
• Special handling or hazard information
• Retail pricing references
• Product images (when available)
HELM then uses this information to automatically generate a default Item Master record, including units of measure and default valuation data. The item is flagged for review so users can easily verify or adjust the information as needed.

Many HELM clients regularly receive donated products that must be researched and entered manually before they can be processed through the system. AI-Automated Item Setup significantly reduces this burden while allowing warehouse operations to continue without delay.
